Amy and Sara Hamann began their studies at the ages of five and four, respectively, in the Yamaha School of Music. Eventually, they were inspired to enroll as piano performance majors at the University of Minnesota School of Music where they studied with Dr. Paul Shaw.
Heralded as "having the eloquence and capacity to maintain their audience under their powers" by Denise de Ceuninck from L'Impartial, Las Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Amy and Sara have been captivating audiences and critics alike wherever they appear.
As winners of the 1989 Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies' Concerto Competition, the Hamanns made their first professional appearance at the former World Theater in Saint Paul. Other appearances include a performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue for the opening ceremonies of the Ted Mann Concert Hall in Minneapolis; Ravel's Mother Goose in a special concert for children; Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and recitals and master classes at the First Quebec International Duo-Piano Festival.
The sisters have been enjoying a busy season with travels to New York City and a tour of Switzerland, which was highly praised by the critics, and concerts in Beijing, China, Rome, Italy, and the Czech Republic.
In addition to winning the 1999 National Federation of Music Clubs Ellis Competition, Amy and Sara were awarded the Lucile Parrish Ward Award for the best performance of American music.
